1. How would you approach configuring Oracle Fusion Demand Planning to support new product introductions where historical demand data is unavailable?

Answer

For a new product with no historical demand, I would use Oracle Fusion Demand Management's Manage Product Launch capability.

If the new product is similar to an existing product, I can define a relationship between the new product and a source product. Oracle allows customer-organization combinations and measure data to be copied from the source product to the new product. A factor can also be applied when the expected demand for the new product is higher or lower than the source product.

If the source product isn't suitable, Oracle allows the customer-organization combinations to be generated without using the source product's history. In that case, the forecast can be based on an already determined forecast or other available planning inputs.

After configuring the product launch relationship, I would run the demand plan again with the appropriate refresh option so the forecast can be generated for the new product.

2. How would you configure Oracle Fusion Demand Planning to support exception-based alerts for forecast consumption issues during a monthly planning cycle?

Answer

I would use plan exceptions in Oracle Fusion Demand Management to identify significant deviations in the demand plan.

First, I would identify the appropriate predefined exception or create a user-defined exception where supported. For example, the exception could be based on a measure and a threshold that identifies a significant deviation between demand-related measures.

I would then configure the exception's level and threshold so that planners aren't presented with excessive alerts. The exception set is associated with the plan through the Plan Options.

During the monthly planning cycle, the planner can run the plan, review the generated exceptions, drill into the relevant planning views, investigate the underlying demand, and take corrective action.

Oracle states that Demand Management supports measure-based exceptions and user-defined exceptions. Exception thresholds can be configured to control how many exceptions are generated.

  • Demand and supply dates

  • Quantity and unit-of-measure consistency

  • On-hand and incoming supply information

  • Manufacturing supply information

  • Sales-order demand

  • Transfer and sourcing information

Answer

I would make sure that the item master changes required by planning are correctly reflected in the planning data and that the relevant planning attributes are consistent.

For example, changes to an item's planning method, planning parameters, lead times, safety stock settings, sourcing information, or manufacturing-related structures can affect planning results.

I would collect the updated planning data and validate that the item and organization combinations are correctly available to the planning process. For manufacturing scenarios, I would also verify that the relevant product structures and supply information are consistent with the planning model.

After the changes are collected, I would run the relevant plan and review the resulting planned orders, supply recommendations, and exceptions to confirm that the updated item information is being used.
